Lunch Box Social

image

A Lunchbox Social in the 1940s was a dance used to raise funds for the community by auctioning off specially prepared lunches during the intermission. Join the Memory Lane community for this entertaining event with good music, food and laughs. Bring a decorated box, containing an anonymous “lunch” to auction, or join in the bidding to purchase a lunch. The “maker” of the lunch is then revealed and must sit with the “owner” of the lunch. Cash Bar.

Our lunch box social kicks-off the Women’s Heritage Celebration and is our tribute to one of the ways women in our community raised money for church and school activities. “Box Socials” and “Pie Socials” were held during the intermission of a dance. Young women made decorated boxes and sat with the highest bidder on their box, sharing their lunch with them. We’ve added an unauthentic twist, by asking men as well as women to bring a lunch. Not everyone has to bring a lunch; you can bid on one and get a surprise lunch companion.

Eastern Shore Homecoming

image

During this year’s Homecoming, we’re celebrating Memory Lane’s 10th anniversary as a community owned and operated heritage attraction. We’ve come a long way in 10 years, and it’s all thanks to the wonderful volunteers and support from the Eastern Shore extended community. This is a chance to see the Village in action, with demonstrations by our volunteer animators.

See the recently restored steam box in the Boat Shop, the Shingle Mill in operation, or the Farmall Cub tractor as it was used to cut fire wood. Enjoy some hymns on the pump organ in the Church, or get the kid’s to search for minerals at the Gold Mine.

We’ll be screening a film on the making of the Village, and there’ll be a chance to look back over the past ten years of activities.

Birthday celebrations are from 2-3 pm and include special guest, Mayor Peter Kelly, refreshments and cake. We welcome all members, volunteers, and the general public to celebrate our 10 years in the community.

Genealogical services from the Eastern Shore Archives are available all day, with our vast community photo database and knowledgeable staff.
