Heritage Quest “Sunday Drive”

Take a Sunday Drive to Memory Lanein celebration of World Heritage Day. We’re launching our new Heritage Hunt for families—a riddle-based mystery tour of the Village with some unique prizes if you solve all the clues. Join our animators in bending a few boat ribs using our new steam box in the Boat Shop. See our Shingle Mill in operation, learn how to use a peavey, and try your hand at tying fishermen’s knots. We’ll have the fires on in the Homestead, and plenty of treats and stories to keep you warm. In recognition of World Heritage Day, it’s free admission! Woodstove Treats & Stories in the Homestead
The fires will be burning and great smells will be coming from the homestead, along with lots of stories about the Eastern Shore.

Learn how to tie some fishing knots, how a lobster trap is made, and the right way to roll a log using a peavey.

The Eastern Shore Archives will be open from 11 AM -3 PM with volunteers on hand to help you find out more about your family tree.

“Make Do” Visual Arts Nova Scotia Regional Exhibit

Visual Arts Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore Regional Exhibtion will be opening June 11th at 5:30 PM prior to the "Inspired by Art" Heritage Dinner. The exhibit will run from June 11th through to July 2nd. Don't miss a chance to see this exhibit featuring over a dozen Eastern Shore artisits who have created pieces specially for this "Make Do" exhibit. Artisits have been inspired by the Memory Lane era of the 1940s and the Eastern Shore talent for making something out of nothing, or whatever is on hand.

2012 Student Job Opportunities - Hiring Soon

Memory Lane Heritage Village has several student job positions open. In order to qualify, you must be a student and planning to return to your studies in High School, University or College in September 2012. For details of hiring, pay and qualifications, email us for a complete job description. We are accepting resumes for the following jobs:

Heritage Programming Coordinator: we are looking for a University Student who has an interest in coordinating programming and special events from May 21st to August 31st. If you are interested in teaching, would like to take a lead role in organizing events, and are interested in developing heritage programs, this will be a good choice to gain lots of useful job experience.

Junior Animators: These jobs involve greeting the public as the storekeeper (in costume), working on special events, animating (in costume, doing heritage activities), helping in the Cookhouse and helping with outdoor projects like painting, gardening, and restoration work. These positions run from July 2nd to August 31st and are suitable for High School students. (You must be at least 15 years of age.)

Artifact Cataloguer: This is a position which requires a high degree of independence, the ability to research using library and internet sources, familiarity with computer systems (Photoshop, Filemaker Pro, Excel), and an interest in old objects. This position runs from July 2nd to August 31st and is suitable for a High School or University student.

Marketing Assistant: This is a 15 week work term for a University student enrolled in a COOP program currently. Please contact your COOP coordinator if you are interested.

Please note that all positions are dependant on Government Student Subsidy programs, which are often not awarded until early May. Some positions may not be funded and therefore will not be made available.

Job Description – Supervising Storekeeper
Lake Charlotte Area Heritage Society

The Storekeeper is a senior staff member of the Memory Lane Heritage Village team. Along with the Cook and the Executive Director, the Storekeeper is responsible for the overall functioning of the Heritage Village, its staff and visitor satisfaction.

Supervision and Reporting

The Storekeeper reports to the Executive Director (E.D.), or in the absence of the E.D., to the Chair of the Heritage Society. The Storekeeper is directly responsible for supervising the students who work in the store, the office administration staff, and volunteers and staff on the Heritage Village grounds. The Storekeeper is not responsible for supervising staff in the Cookhouse. However, the Storekeeper is responsible for reporting incidents in the Cookhouse that may jeopardize visitor or staff safety, or quality visitor experiences (i.e. poor washroom maintenance, food safety, inappropriate behavior).

Areas of Responsibility

Store & Gift Shop

Management and supervision of the Store and Gift Shop staff, including review of work schedule, adherence to work schedule, approval of time sheets, and review of tasks related to the store (i.e. cleanliness of washrooms and entrance).

Oversee daily cash sheets with periodic review of work completed by student staff. Ensure deposits from daily cash sheets are correct and paperwork is in good order.

Oversee deposits to the bank and replenishment of the store, bar and cookhouse floats.

Along with the E.D. or Chair, ensure that expenses and payables are approved and paid in a timely fashion.

Oversee the control of gift shop inventory, appropriate tagging and restocking / ordering.

Oversee consignment aspect of the gift shop (actual work is carried out by a volunteer).

Be present onsite for the duration of the open hours when no other senior staff is present.

Events & Visitor Services

Handle issues of concern to store staff or volunteers, by directing grievances to the E.D. if they are not able to be solved.

Ensure visitor tracking sheets are maintained and information is recorded on the computer file.

Review village grounds periodically to ensure authenticity and cleanliness of the site is maintained.

Assist student staff with liaising with volunteers and board members when necessary.

Be present during high visitor event days (Car Show and weddings)

Assist with school tours when necessary.

Remuneration and Requirements

Hours are variable and based on weekly schedule. Not to exceed 20 hours per week without the permission of the Society Chair. Pay is $11 per hour + 4% vacation pay and free Cookhouse lunch. Total guaranteed hours are 273 hours.

 

Job Description – Maintenance Assistant
LakeCharlotte Area Heritage Society

Supervision and Reporting

The Maintenance Assistant is a senior staff member of the Memory Lane Heritage Village team. The Maintenance Assistant reports to the Executive Director (E.D) or in their absence the Society Chair. The Maintenance Assistant works consultatively with members of the Society’s Maintenance Committee.

Areas of Responsibility

Using the Master Maintenance list and the individual building condition reports, the Maintenance Assistant will carry out repair and maintenance tasks as assigned by the E.D.

Work will be carried out in a timely manner with minimal effect on the visitors to the Heritage Village.

Work will be carried out according to the principals and techniques of the 1940s era, whenever possible using materials in keeping with the style of this time period.

Work will be carried out according to a schedule worked out by the E.D. and the Maintenance Assistant in advance, and will be flexible in nature.

Occasionally the Maintenance Assistant will be asked to direct or lead a team of volunteers in a task that requires more than one assistant.

The majority of work will take place during the start-up of the Heritage Village season in May and June, but some hours may be required during the summer months to make repairs.

Some hours will also be required in the fall, after the closing of the season in September.

Skills Required

Intermediate Carpentry Skills (traditional use of hand tools an asset)

Able to lift 50 pounds

Able to climb ladders (roof work not a requirement)

Able to safely use power tools and hand tools

Ability to repair doors / windows / locking mechanisms

Understanding of antique machines and vehicles an asset

Understanding of exterior construction

Knowledge of traditional construction an asset

Remuneration and Requirements

Hours are variable and based on mutual agreement between the E.D. and the Maintenance Assistant. Not to exceed 90 hours per season without the permission of the Society Chair. Pay is $13 - $15 per hour + 4% vacation pay and free Cookhouse lunch on working days. Total guaranteed hours are 90 hours during the 2012 season. Season starts June 15 and ends September 15, maintenance work begins in early May.

The Lake Charlotte Area Heritage Society is holding its Annual General Meeting on Monday, May 7th at 6:00 PM sharp in the Memory Lane Cookhouse - refreshments will be served! Now is the time to renew a lapsed membership. Please see details below on how to renew your membership.

This year our special guest will be the Minister for Communities, Culture and Heritage, Dave Wilson. We encourage you to come to hear the minister speak and show how strong our Society is. In the interests of time we will not be reviewing the minutes from 2011 during the AGM. You will be able to view a copy online on our website or come a little early to the meeting to review them.
 
In order to vote at this meeting, you must have a valid 2012 membership. A membership form is available from our website, click on the Heritage Society tab. You can renew by bringing a cheque with you on May 7th to the Annual General Meeting or mailing a cheque to us in advance. Or, pay online by going to our Online Gift Shop and clicking on membership. Finally, call us with your credit card information, and we can renew over the phone.

Members are a vital part of the Heritage Society and we need more of them. Please consider buying a membership for a friend. A strong membership demonstrates the importance of our work in preserving the heritage of the Eastern Shore. Individual memberships are $10, Family is $25, and a Lifetime membership is $150.
