1940s Webber Family Paper Dolls

Careful research allows us to present the “Webber Family” as they would have looked in the 1940s, in both their “Everyday” and “Sunday Best” clothing. The back outside cover has a family history, and the whole inside cover acts as a backdrop for the dolls. The dolls themselves, as well as their accompanying cutouts, are printed on heavier stock to prolong their play life. Complete instructions included.

Wooden Building Blocks

Our building blocks are made from a variety of Nova Scotia hardwoods and softwoods. All of the blocks are unfinished so they are safe to chew. They are modular in size and pack away exactly into their own durable wooden box, which creates a puzzle for the user. The box acts as a base for building towers. Suitable for children older than a year. Contains 27 blocks in total, ranging in size from 4 cm to 12 cm.

Traditional Playing Card Holder

In rural areas of Nova Scotia card playing, especially “45s” was, and still is, a popular evening pastime. These simple, yet functional, playing card holders allow very young hands, or arthritic hands, to hold and display their cards easily. Made of Nova Scotia finished hardwoods.

1940s Roller Towel & Holder

Before paper towels, washing machines, and dryers made cleaning-up easy, a roller towel was a convenient way to provide a towel for drying or cleaning. Our fully functional, 1940s era, reusable roller towel is still useful today, especially in kitchens and workshops. Available in heritage red, blue or green, as well as natural with a spar varnish finish. Additional towels also available.

Wooden Boat Builder’s Nail Caddy

Norm Hutt of Owls Head, a renowned local wooden-boat builder, probably made the original nail caddy on which our reproductions are based. The distinctive shape allows it to be easily pushed along a rough floor while working underneath a hull. One traditional boat nail is included with each caddy. Available stained to match the original, natural with spar varnish, or unfinished. Makes a great fruit basket.

The Place, by Robert Milton Ritcey

Life on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia in the 1920s –1930s

"Written by a gifted observer and storyteller, The Place is a vivid autobiographical journey back into childhood days spent roaming the neighbourhood of Nova Scotia's renowned Martinique Beach (Lower East Petpeswick) during the Depression and the lead-up to the Second WorldWar. In a big way, this is the tale that we all wish that our parents or grandparents had taken the time to jot down. Indeed, for many of us, it is the story of our ancestors. Read it and you'll love those folks all the more, regardless of their background. Prepare to yearn for your own exploratory trip up the peaceful coast that lies east of Halifax."
Mike Sanders, Senior Archaeologist,
Cultural Resource Management Group

"Robert Ritcey’s memoir of his boyhood in the 1920s and 1930s is brimming with evocative details of everyday life in the coastal village of East Petpeswick, on Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore. Ritcey invites us back to a rural world of small-scale fishing, farming, and logging, of wooden boats and ox-drawn sleds, of one-room schools and party-line telephones. He lovingly describes the sights, sounds, tastes, smells, and textures of his childhood landscape and recalls the hard work and ingenuity of the people who made a modest, independent living on this seabound coast. The Place is a charming portrait of a time now passing out of living memory."
Sara Spike, PhD, Cultural Historian

Clam Harbour Clam Digging Adventure

Clam digging excursions have ended for the 2018 season.
Please check back in the spring for 2019 dates!

The salty sea invites you to harvest its bounty on the shores of Clam Harbour.

Your clam digging adventure begins at Memory Lane Heritage Village, where you will be introduced to the heritage of clam digging on the Eastern Shore. Next, you will meet your guide, Darcy Baker, a fourth generation clam digger.

Darcy will guide you to the mud flats of Clam Harbour where he will show you how to use a clam fork to dig white, soft-shelled clams. Learn about the clams and their habitat, techniques for harvesting and how this industry has changed over the years.

Once you have finished your clamming, return to the Heritage Village to enjoy a "feed" of steamed clams in the comfort of the Cookhouse, along with a traditional meal of baked beans, soup, brown bread and gingerbread for dessert.

Your adventure includes a self-guided tour of Memory Lane Heritage Village and a chance to see the harvesting tools used during the 1940s, when clam factories were an important part of the local economy.

Please be prepared to get wet and bring water shoes or rubber boots and a change of socks (footwear can be provided if needed).
